Sirjan Regional Rounds West Zone

The realization of the first half of the second marathon attempt (in relation to the resources available) towards Disha’s self proclaimed goal of “inspiring an entrepreneurial wave throughout the Nation, that’ll play a significant role in changing the Nation’s tomorrow by working on the Nation’s DNA” may have looked seamless to most outsiders, was incongruently perhaps a little less accurate. We did have few last moment hick ups with one of our judges falling ill and few teams not being able to turn up at the venue despite our efforts of reaching them.

There were a total of nine teams selected for the West Zone regional round however only four could make it to the venue. The business plans shared were in general appreciated by all judges and participants alike. Their enthusiasm was noticeable, perhaps even over brimming for some. From our past year’s experience this was not very surprising.

What happened well perhaps was that we still managed to touch a lot of lives in the process which arguably is the most sustaining change introduced at the DNA level which is what we aspire for. We had teams from non business backgrounds who got an opportunity to get inputs from the panel of our judges which was an immense value add for them.

We would also like to appreciate the efforts of the volunteers from VJTI e-cell in assisting us with organizing the event. They too being from the engineering background had an interaction with the judges and participants that helped them understand the dynamics related to entrepreneurship. We also propagated our belief that entrepreneurship was a bent of mind that was as useful in the corporate and social sectors as it is for startups.

Both participants and judges shared rich feedback with us which we are in the process of incorporating in our operations going forward. All judges shared intentions of sustaining their patronage to Srijan in the forthcoming years as well.

All in all the day turned out to be fairly eventful and perhaps in a number of ways the event was fulfilling in the context of our aspirations with the platform of Srijan. This experience has also made us more confident and determined of our vision about the Nation’s tomorrow.

Sirjan Regional Rounds North Zone

All the anxiety and nervousness filled in our hearts and minds we stepped in the bus headed to International Management Institute (IMI) Delhi, to conduct the regional round of Sijan’10. After entering the campus all our last minute preparations started taking shape with registration counter setting up to finalizing the rooms to conduct the event.

The participants started registering and all our excitements were rising. The profiles of the participants varied from PhDs to 12th pass students.
Our distinguished judges like Mr. P.K Mukherjee, IT Head Tata Steel, Vishwadeep Bajaj, Founder & CEO ValueFirst, Mahesh Mahajan, Strategic Head Tulip Telecom, R Sreenivasan, Co-founder Career Launcher, arrived.

After a small briefing of judges and participants about the event, evaluating criteria and the procedure, we did a Sree Ganesh to the evaluation of teams. The anxiety levels were smoothening with each team moving in for evaluation. With 18 teams to handle at Delhi, we had the toughest time in scheduling and coordinating.
Our anxiety levels and curiosity made us take a feedback from the participants. Here, I would like to quote a few:
"It was an extremely enjoyable experience of making a presentation at Srijan’10. The organizers did a marvelous job in selecting the potential entrepreneurs and encouraging them to demonstrate their technologies. The endeavor is going to benefit the country at large."
- Dr. G.S Sodhi, Associate Professor, Delhi University

"IWSB work was remarkable, way of conducting & handling the new emerging entrepreneurs was excellent. Need these type of competition, “Srijan”, in future too, will greatly gonna help the new entrepreneurs, share very good experience being in Sijan, learnt many new things & definitely will look forward for participation in Srijan’11."
- Team Artifice

"I will remember the immense support and friendly nature extended to me from the Srijan’10 team. It was highly enjoyable to come and meet like minded people brought together by Srijan.
- Vishal Bhola, Team_ IIT Gawhati.

The appreciation that we received as a team from the participants was the most satisfying part of the event. The motive of bringing the entrepreneurs together and providing a platform for them to bring to the world their ideas was recognized by all the participants. We like to thanks the e-Cell Coordinator of IMI Delhi, Mr.Shankey and Mr.Ankiet and whole IMI family to bestowing us with immense support.

As the event ended we saw many satisfied faces. The participants were satisfied by their presentation, the judges were satisfied by the quality of the innovative business ideas that were presented and the Srijan team with the successful closure of the regional rounds across the nation.

‘Disha’ an initiative for Inspiring Entrepreneurial Leadership

What started as a dream of one student got transferred as a shared dream of two, took shape in the form of a name, of a vision, got transferred to all forty of us, is what is known as Disha. Disha, Center for Inspiring Entrepreneur Leadership, which started in the form of a conventional e-cell with a vision to foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem on campus, has today morphed into a full-fledged centre of excellence, got recognition at the highest level as the fastest growing e-cell in the country by the apex body of e-cells (NEN), is today well on its way of realising a larger dream, i.e. to foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem on campus and the country at large. As a further recognition of their efforts, Disha-CIEL was felicitated at the global conference of e-cells, organised by IIT-Bombay under the aegis of NEN, where Disha-CIEL was bestowed with the honour of being a mature e-cell, one amongst only seven in the country (including the likes of IIMs, IITs & BITS-Pilani) in just seven months of its existence; a feat never achieved before.
Today Disha is a thriving student body with partnerships and support from some of the biggest names in industry and academia.

Recalling Srijan'09

Perhaps it will be very wise to say, “It’s all about the journey and not the destination!”
Destinations don’t teach us…. Journeys do in the form of a myriad of experiences.

Today when I look back at Srijan’09 I get mixed emotions. I still recall the moment when we the first batch of IWSBian’s had huddled up in the basement board room, stretching from one corner to the other, promising eager faces all trying to figure out what would be an apt event to launch the entrepreneurial cell activities of our very own IWSB.
Shom our director, ushered everyone to be comfortable, and soon a silence of alertness followed. Shom started the discussion by what all we could do, soon followed by what all should we do? Now I know perhaps Shom was toying with us for a while, given the direction he then sort out to give the team that laid down the foundation of Disha our e-cell. The star of the show however was in my opinion Jaydeep our very own evangelist of Disha. It’s Jaydeep who suggested the name Disha and it has stuck all along since then with all the activities the IWSBian’s do in the field of entrepreneurship. Lead by Shom we all ideated to give birth to the objectives that Disha would pursue then on. The words were very clear and made a lot of sense. Target the entrepreneurial ecosystem… Inspire new Blood… Use the Big Ideas and the momentum created by their success to drive more and more fresh Blood in the entrepreneurial pool.
All this collectively was given the shape of Srijan the annual business plan competition with a unique purpose and agenda of providing a platform to launch entrepreneurs who hold the key to tomorrow, into their destiny that they deserve. It was decided that we would practice what we preach…. Ideas can come from anywhere, any background, any age and hence it was decided that Srijan would be open to all. Only because IWSB believes that Internet holds the key to gaining several important insights into businesses and markets that we took a call to use online registration as a must. However extensive marketing was done in the form of posters, banners and pamphlets apart from the viral side, which too was extensively used. I guess that the whole idea of making on line registration a must makes the thing an Internet affair and hence it also works towards encouraging people to go online.
Soon the day of the launch came by and a small band of rebels embarked on a journey from a corner stall at The Maurya’s during the 2008 Tiecon.
Now when I look back it all seems to be right there around the corner…. Time flies by!
I remember scores and scores of ideas poured in on us out of which around 250 were taken through the first round of screening. During arranging for their evaluation we also got valuable industry exposure and the interactions helped develop some of our own entrepreneurial skills.
As time passed we were able to short list about 45 odd entries for the regional rounds. I recall going to Mumbai to host the West round and we did the event in IIT Mumbai.
To say that the event went seamless will be a white lie. It was far from seamless although thankfully the participants and the judges both gave us positive feedback. Here I got the first chance to see the participants and I must say at the least I was very impressed. People from all sections and backgrounds had taken the challenge to fight it out there. I salute the spirit of entrepreneurship that each one of them had, kindled within their hearts, feeding their passions and promising to shape the world.
As the finals approached, the schedules turned hectic, as we all got busy arranging the logistics and Judges. The Judges profile was again something to remember of. People from various lines of expertise had made it to the venue to give their final verdicts on the entrepreneurial feats Srijan 09 had tapped for them. Although all teams were full of bright ideas and enthusiastic team members, most of them were still either too futuristic or lacking scalability. Despite a tough round of intense scrutiny, six finalists made it to the finish line and as of now all the six teams are gearing for incubation lead by our in-house incubation team who took the baton from us to take the ideas on their dream journeys.

I am sure as those six teams made it a number of other teams came and went back but not empty handed I am sure. They have added on to their business acumen to say the least as few may have really benefited from our mentoring platform extended to the regional round winners.
In essence this whole journey of Srijan 09 was very exiting as we witnessed some dreams come true and I am sure that this is a modest beginning of a phenomenon that will catch up with the Nation like wild fire in the days to come.
